Storm in the Seed | Zijing Chen | It is a surreal journey back to the memory of fear, awakening from darkness to the brightness beyond. Echoing the resonating thunderstorm, the scene implies a drowning experience. Sunken inside the darkness, a sudden burst of light pierces through, transforming the world into a serene scenery The drowning experience is not based on a personal encounter, but rather symbolizes fear and a sense of powerlessness. As I composed the soundtrack prior to visuals, the emotional ambiance and rhythm were established first, preceding the specific narrative. Thus, drowning becomes the apex of the storm, representing the peak of a journey filled with fear. The title “Storm in the Seed” metaphorically captures the story’s structure. The storm burgeons from a flower’s rapid growth, bringing the first raindrop, and culminates in awakening at the center of the flower, beneath an endless sea. |
Zijing Chen (Chinese, b. 1997) is an indie-animation director, illustrator, and visual artist based in London. During the period from 2016 to 2020, Zijing studied BA Painting at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, and from 2020 to 2022, pursued an MA in Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts. During this time, she created several experimental animated short films. In 2018, her animated work “Amblyopia” was exhibited at Shanghai Pearlam Galleries. In 2022, Zijing participated in the production of the animation part of the independent film “Frankenfish by the River” as the animation director. Zijing is deeply interested in storytelling and the subtle life experiences they unfold. For her, animation is the perfect medium to explore the possibility of narrative for its subjectivity and time-based trait. Animation opens a path for her to create transformational spaces in the flow of time. Her works often employ literary devices such as metaphor and symbolism to explore fundamental existential questions of human existence or dive into the landscape of consciousness. Visually, Zijing’s works seek to capture the vibrant interplay of colors within the darkness, creating a paradoxical aesthetic that merges confrontation with allure.

A Blinking Existence | Tim M. Sullivan |
A door appears in darkness as your final distorted visions blink before you.

AfterMath | Kent Tate | AfterMath describes a time when there was a wide spread belief of some grand global plan when in reality there was no plan of any kind, only competing interests constantly jockeying for a dominate position while coercing everyone else to comply or else. Sequences in order of appearance: Soviet computer scientist just prior to the dissolution of the USSR – Another Soviet computer scientist just prior to the dissolution of the USSR – Semi-Trailer Truck with Trans Mountain gas line pipes resting at a Travel Center in BC – The Poplar River coal fired electrical power plant during a period of record rainfall in Saskatchewan – Abandoned car exposed on a lake bed during a record breaking drought in Saskatchewan – Canadian newscaster describing an event during the G10 summit in Toronto – Super 8 movie clip from my Museum of Post Habitation – Decommissioned electrical sub-station near my house in BC – 3D print file (animated) of the HDV videotape camera I recorded with for many years |
Kent Tate is a Canadian artist/filmmaker whose work explores the dichotomy between tranquility and activity in our natural and manufactured worlds. Time, motion and stillness are intertwined through Tate’s work to act like a fulcrum upon which the environmental, social and philosophical aspects of his projects are held in dynamic balance. Tate has received awards, grants, and artist residencies for his projects which have been exhibited internationally at film/new media festivals, symposiums, group screenings/exhibitions and solo gallery exhibitions/tours.

|

Among Us | Mara | Among Us is a cut paper stop motion animation about Monsters. Like monsters throughout human cultures, Monsters embody my fear and anxiety around the ever-present abuse and horror in the concurrent political, environmental, and social unraveling that we are bearing witness to. Like the real-world monsters who perpetrate horror and destruction my monsters are not frightening to look at, it is their actions that make them monstrous. |

Destruction of the Field | Enzo Cillo | Destruction of the field is a work on the disappearance of each knowable element, on the deconstruction of a visual field. The device reveals visual disturbances that the eye can follow with oscillating movements in a rectangular space. Destruction becomes a new code, a new form. Music by Ambasce single-channel video, color, 16:9, stereo, 12 min |
Enzo Cillo is a new media artist interested in the mechanism of perception and the idea of the image as a set of shapes and distances. His research investigates the meaning of the space within the image. His works try to deconstruct the visible field, emptying it from its meaning. Moving forward he had the opportunity to rethink not only at the video itself but also at the moment when the projection is meant as the spatial extension of the image. His works are exhibited in various museums, participating also to international festivals such as the Transient Visions, ECRA, nodoCCS and Experiments in Cinema. He currently lives and works in Rome.

A lonely young woman belongs more to the sea universe than to the human world.

Empire | Grant Petrey | The nocturnal city reveals a machine of desiring forces linked to the spectacle of Capitalism. In the consuming night, the dazzlement of the city as a networked flow of information and surveillance is revealed. Affective forces create and shape the experience of this machinic city, but within this illumination and control, seeking out the liminal, queer spaces of desire becomes more urgent. |
Grant Petrey’s creative practice spans; time based media, curatorial projects, production and research. He has presented his research and work internationally, with early work being part of the National Collection of Great Britain & Northern Ireland and moving image work being part of the British Film Institute (BFI) Archive. His fine art practice explores temporality via the triangulation of the still and moving image with the sonic. Recent work has been curated by Alex Da Corte, Kathy Rae Huffman, Ruth Claxton, and Beth Fox and recently screened in; the Whitechapel Gallery, London, the Centre for Contemporary Culture Barcelona; Contemporary Art Ruhr, Berlin and Crane Arts, Philadelphia. He currently works as a Senior Lecturer in theory and practice in the School of Screen at University of the Arts London, and Senior Lecturer in the School of Fine Art at University for the Creative Arts. He has worked extensively with Turner Contemporary, Margate, Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

TURBULENCE | Telemach Wiesinger | The film poem TURBULENCE stands in the field of tension between surreal fantasy and multi-layered reality. Telemach Wiesinger’s photographic recordings of aeroplanes from the perspective of the traveller encounter kinetic wing objects by the composer Alexander Grebtschenko. In the congenial collaboration of the two artists, the electronically controllable “Chimera’s” – elegant bird wings with megaphone – unfold expressive “acting” presence. The dialogue between the sound level (Grebtschenko) and the visual level (analogue film workshop Wiesinger) opens up space for emotions, thoughts and interpretations. (Thomas Spiegelmann, 2022) |
